Favorite places to shop:
Amazon (see a list of all of my Amazon favorites items here but most can be found at Art Center, Michaels, or Blick at similar or lower prices)
Hobby Lobby - Master’s Touch paper and brushes are great for beginners. I have never used their line of paint.
SUPPLIES (I’ve linked the items below to Blick but shop around and find the best deal):
Brushes - round #6, #10 and Flat 1”
Princeton Heritage makes a great set, better than student grade, not high cost. Do not feel like you need to buy all 3.
One #8 round and a cheaper flat brush works fine. The flat will be used for wetting paper and washes.Van Gogh brushes are very affordable and great - if you are ordering other things on Blick I would suggest these.
Master’s Touch at Hobby Lobby is a decent brush and often on sale 40% off. You can get all three sizes on sale for $12.
Tape - Artists or painters tape 1” - I prefer white tape to the Scotch blue painters tape. Duck tape brand works great and less expensive than “artist tape” but any of these will work well. I will have tape available.
Spray Bottle - any spray bottle with a fine mist. I’ve purchased at Dollar Store or Amazon. I will have a few spray bottles available.
Paper - I will supply paper for each project but you will want your own for practice. I usually use a cheaper paper for warm up and use a nicer 100% cotton paper for projects. You can use
For practice I suggest Canson XL Watercolor or Hobby Lobby Master’s Touch Watercolor Paper - I buy 9x12 and cut down when needed.
I use Strathmore 400 for some of my work. I buy 9x12 and cut down when needed.
Arches 140lb Coldpress - this is the best/professional paper. You can buy the 22x30” sheet at any art/supply store and tear down to size. I’ll demo this in class and also give a sample to try so you can wait to buy this.
Paint - This depends on your personal choice. There are many pre-made convenience sets with filled pans.
Student grade is less expensive and results/pigment will vary. Professional grade will give you the best results.I have used the following and like the result:
Daniel Smith - the most economical way to buy and use paint if you plan to continue. The Essentials set plus a tube of Sepia is great if you ant to learn how to mix your own. We’ll go over this in one of our lessons. You can also buy any color you love by the tube, or a large set. These are a professional level paint and my favorite. You will need an empty plastic palette like this or butcher tray if you go with tube paint. NOTE: I will be using this brand for all demos and project. Those who rent or purchase will also be using these.
Winsor Newton Cotman - student grade and a great starter set if you’re not ready to invest in a nicer quality paint.
Other brands I love are M. Graham, Holbein, DaVinci, and Winsor Newton Professional. All of these give similar results.
Tote or tackle box to carry your supplies
Mark Making Tools - cut up old gift card, straight razor blade, cut up mat board (I will have some available to try)
Sponges - sea sponge (I will have some available to try)
Pencil
